Become a ringer

There are a little over a thousand Ringers in the UK. To become a licensed Ringer takes a few years of dedication, but it is extremely rewarding, and it is a way for a spare time volunteer to make a significant contribution to the science of ornithology.

Rye Meads is one of the country's leading training groups - over the past 40 years we have trained dozens of Ringers, many of whom have gone on to become professional ornithologists.

To become a ringing trainee, all you need is an interest in birds, a willingness to learn, and the commitment to get up before dawn for many weekends a year! Be warned that not everyone has the necessary dedication, physical co-ordination and patience, but if you think you do, we'd be pleased to hear from you. We accept trainees aged 16 or over, but you can also start as a helper at age 15.

We always have a small group of trainees, but there is always room for one more! Why not come along to see what is involved? Contact us and we'd be pleased to introduce you to a fascinating and rewarding pastime.
